Background of the Problem
Insect pests cause serious damage to important cultivated crops. In the last few decades, chemical control has been widely adopted for the management of these insect pests. However, dependence on pesticides is not sustainable because of associated environmental problems, development of resistance to insects, insecticides, and the outbreak of secondary pests.
Hence there is a need to identify suitable alternative methods for the management of insect pests.
What is Biological Control?
The use of pesticides to prevent pest attacks is increasing day by day. This has many side effects. Biological pest control plays an important role in reducing these side effects. Biological control has been used in various fields of biology, especially for pesticides and plant growth. The use of other organisms to control the pests of crops is called bio-control. Currently, the EPN biological control factor is being used to control many important insects worldwide so that many important insect pesticides can be controlled. The use of EPNs to control pesticides is a potential non-chemical approach.

Bio Vigyan Agritec Private Limited is a Startup began in 2021 by an International Business Graduate from Grenoble Ecole de Management, Paris. We are at present, working in the field of agricultural services and bio – Agri input manufacturing industry. Raider - EPN Bio Pesticide Formulation
Raider is a biological grub control that consists of entomopathogenic nematodes. These entomopathogenic nematodes are excellent biocontrol agents for controlling insect pests. Raider consists of EPN strain of Heterorabditis Indica. This product is a safer alternative to the toxic range of chemical inputs often used.
IT IS A NON-CHEMICAL, NON-TOXIC, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, AND ECOLOGICALLY SAFE METHOD OF CONTROLLING INSECT PESTS.
This technology is developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Sugarcane Breeding Institute and has been tested in its research stations and agricultural fields across the country.
What are Entomopathogenic Nematodes (EPN)?
EPNs are a group of nematodes (threads or insects), which are soil-dwelling, deadly insect parasites belonging to the phylum (species) nematode of the steinernema and heterorhabditis families. Entomopathogenic nematodes are soft-bodied, non-segmented roundworms that are obligate or sometimes facultative parasites of insects. They are also called endoparasitic nematodes because they live in the parasitic form inside the infected pest whereas plant-parasitic nematodes do not kill insects but damage plants.

Recommended Crops
Sugarcane, Groundnut, Brinjal, Banana, Potato, Cardamom, Coffee, Tea, Arecanut, Ginger, Chilli, Okra, Turf Grass and Forest Nurseries.
How Raider (EPN) Kills White Grubs?
Third stage juveniles of the EPN species are infective. They are free-living, nonfeeding, and possess highly sensitive chemoreceptors which can detect host cues. When an insect has been located, the nematodes enter into the insect body cavity via natural body openings (mouth, anus, spiracles) or cuticle. After entering the insect hemolymph, bacteria released produce toxins with insecticidal properties and the insect gets killed with 24-48 h due to septicemia (blood poisoning). In the dead insect, nematodes and bacteria feed on insect body contents and reproduce inside the cadaver. After completing several generations, the infective juvenile is released into the environment to infect other host insects and continue their life.
Dosage
- 2kg Raider per acre of the field.
- For Prevention: Use 2- 3 kg Per acre.
- Moderate Infestation: 4 kg per acre.
- High population of grub: 5 kg or above per acre
Field Application:
- EPN should be applied during the first beetle emergence during onset of the summer shower (April - June)
- Irrigate the field prior to and after the EPN application.
- The ideal time of application is in the evening hours, so EPN can become active at night without the risk of sunlight damage.
- Do mix Raider with other chemicals while applying. Apply the product before or after 5 days of Fertigation.
- Mix EPN Formulation with water and can be drenched it using a Knapsack sprayer or
- Thoroughly Mix the Raider formulation with soil or FYM and broadcast in the field.
Technological Source
A Memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) – Sugarcane Breeding Institute(SBI), Coimbatore, and BioVigyan Agritec Private Limited, Tirunelveli on 29 July 2021 to manufacture and market the ICAR – SBI EPN Formulation – Biological Grub Control. This technology was released by SBI as the new crop protection technology, especially for Sugarcane and other crops like groundnut and horticulture crops.
The MoU was signed on July 29, 2021, between Dr. G.Hemaprabha, The Director, of Sugarcane Breeding Institute, and Mr. R.K Avkaash, Managing Director, Bio Vigyan Agritec Private Limited. The MoU was exchanged in the presence of the Principal Scientist of this technology Dr. C.Sankaranarayanan.
Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Sugarcane Breeding Institute
Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri. Narendra Singh Tomar Released the ICAR- SBI EPN Bio Pesticide Formulation.
Dr. G.Hemaprabha, Director of ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute said that the ‘entomo-pathogenic nematodes’ formulation developed by the Institute is an effective biopesticide for the management of white grubs, which has been a serious menace for sugarcane farmers, she also said that this formulation can be easily applied in the sugarcane fields and it is eco-friendly.
Our Managing Director Mr. RK Avkaash explaining about our product “RAIDER” and this “ICAR SBI EPN BIOPESTICIDE FORMULATION” technology to the honourable Member of Parliament Mrs. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi. The expo was held on June 5 2022 on account of World environment day at Killikulam Agribusiness Incubation Forum (KABIF).
